Family Literacy Night
We are happy to report to you that the Geraldine Johnson School of Hope’s Family Literacy Night was a smashing success! Two hundred parents and children attended; the principal expected 75! Somehow, reminiscent of the story of the loaves and the fishes, staff were able to generate enough copies, food and books to go around, with absolutely no hint of panic or chaos. Literacy coaches provided parents, through hands-on demonstrations, ways to read to their children so that it was a fun and meaningful activity and would promote further family learning experiences.
Speaking of books, each child in attendance received five books for his/her home library, to go with the books they had already obtained at the two previous family literacy nights. A large body of scientific research shows that the single most important factor related to reading at grade level by grade three is the number of books in the home, regardless of socio-economic status. Thank you to our Day of Caring partners (Book Drive) who provided the books for these family literacy nights.
Congratulations to Marlene Roberts, principal; to her dedicated staff; to Albert, Parent Advisory Council President; Lisa, Home/School Coordinator; and to Gus Serra, GE, and Bob Hendrick, Bigelow Tea, for attending and showing their support for this initiative.
