Become a Mentor

Mentoring for Brian Clarke of the Norwalk Mentor Program has taken him full circle, all the way back to his high school alma mater, Brien McMahon High School, where his mentee, Freddy, is a freshman. This shared experience laid the foundation of their fairly new relationship which has developed into a sincere and trusting friendship. “Overall, it’s rewarding and interesting. I get to learn about Freddy in our conversations, and I like finding ways to give him guidance,” said Brian.

Over 120 mentors and mentees came out to Wi-mentor's annual bowling night at Nutmeg Bowl on Saturday, March 26! Under the disco lighting, mentors were able to spend time with their mentees, eat some pizza, and have an all-around great time bowling. The students look forward to this event every year, and this year did not disappoint! Check out the slide show for some great action shots! Thanks to all who made the night a success!

Sacred Heart University in Fairfield is home to the Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) which serves over 30 students in grade six at nearby John Winthrop Elementary School. The program matches students with mentors who provide them with guidance, advice, and companionship for three years, preparing them for transition into high school.

In honor of National Mentoring Month, the Mentoring Institute of Coastal Fairfield County hosted a Regional Mentor Recognition Banquet at Sacred Heart University on Tuesday, February 15, 2011. The keynote speaker for the night was Charlie Appelstein, MSW. Charlie was highly entertaining, knowledgeable, and got more than a few laughs out of everyone who attended. He shared best mentoring practices, hilarious anecdotes, and even a song or two, all focused on the idea that there is no such thing as a bad kid.
