Our Goal
United Way has put a stake in the ground on education. Our goal is to cut the number of high school dropouts in half by 2018. To accomplish this goal in Coastal Fairfield County, we are helping to prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn, to provide individual support for students who are struggling with reading, and to keep teens in school to ensure they graduate on time. We see education as a birth-to-21 continuum; however reducing the dropout rate is challenging, considering:
- 21% of children do not attend pre-K
- 60% of fourth graders cannot read proficiently
- 20% of high school students fail to graduate on time
Our Focus Areas
We have developed initiatives that address each of these areas to help our youth succeed:
READ. LEARN. SUCCEED.
Building a foundation for learning from birth.
Bridges to Tomorrow
Supporting our youth with out-of-school activities and mentors.
