Opening day at the Norwalk Public Library VITA site a success!
The day marked the return of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program to the main Norwalk Library on Belden Avenue as well as the program expansion, utilizing the South Norwalk Library. Congressman Jim Himes, joined Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling, former mayor and current president of the Norwalk Library Board of Directors, Alex Knopp, Kevin McKeon, IRS District Liaison, United Way of Coastal Fairfield County's, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Cathy DeCesare, Christine Bradley, Director of the Norwalk Public Library and Gloria Caesar, VITA Coordinator for CAHS ( Connecticut Association for Human Services) to kick off the season. and thank the volunteers.
VITA is a volunteer run program which relies on the dedication and commitment of local neighbors helping neighbors.
Last year the program serviced 3,487 eligible households providing free tax preparation and filing of both state and federal taxes. This saved the community $697,400 in fees and secured $6,162,201 in estimated tax refunds and $2,087,077 in EITC (Earned Income Tax Credits) for hard working families in Coastal Fairfield County.
VITA services are available to all households that earned less than $54,000 in 2017.
