GE Volunteers support School of Hope

A group of GE Volunteers got together to brighten up the entranceway to Geraldine Johnson School with flowers and mulch.  While at the school, they also had an opportunity to read to the children.  Dr. Jim Crispino of United Way talked to the volunteers about Schools of Hope and why United Way supports this program.  It was a great show of community support by GE.  Perhaps Marlene Roberts, principal of Geraldine Johnson, put it best......

United Way Receives Success Through Educational Partnerships Award

Merle Berke-Schlessel, Esq., President & CEO Receives Award

Cooperative Educational Services and Linda Page, Director of its School Readiness Program, honored United Way and 5 other organizations and individuals today with its first annual Success Through Educational Partnerships Award at the Regional Center for the Arts High School in Trumbull.  We are proud of our partnership with C.E.S. and are glad that our work in providing preschool students and their families with children’s books and literacy workshops to promote reading and literacy in the classroom and at home is making a difference in the C.E.S.

Family Literacy Night

We are happy to report to you that the Geraldine Johnson School of Hope’s Family Literacy Night was a smashing success! Two hundred parents and children attended; the principal expected 75! Somehow, reminiscent of the story of the loaves and the fishes, staff were able to generate enough copies, food and books to go around, with absolutely no hint of panic or chaos. Literacy coaches provided parents, through hands-on demonstrations, ways to read to their children so that it was a fun and meaningful activity and would promote further family learning experiences.

Schools of Hope

Until grade three, children learn to read; after grade three, they read to learn. The Schools of Hope initiative, funded by the JPMorganChase Foundation, focuses on this single outcome-reading at grade level by grade three-as its measure of success.
It provides supplemental resources to children grades K through 3 to enhance early literacy skills.
